Insurance isn’t a career path that comes to mind for most, unless you have a family member who is in the insurance industry. But I think you should reconsider a career path in insurance since almost everything in life involves insurance in some facet- from the car you drive, the house you live in, the doctors office you go to when you are sick, the restaurants you eat at, and so on.
I bet you even have insurance on the phone you are reading this blog on!

And…. There are so many different careers paths within the insurance industry.
If you are curious to learn about career potential in the agency/ sales side of insurance, this is a great place to see how an agency runs. If you have ever thought about being an entrepreneur- this is a great pace to see what goes into running your own show.
Plus, there are plenty of job opportunities in insurance. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics employment of insurance sales agents is projected to grow 10 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. And US News ranked insurance agents as a top career in sales and marketing.
When I was a kid- being an insurance agent definitely wasn’t what I wanted to do when I grew up. As a child, I really wanted to be a hair dresser and in college I really thought wanted to go into politics (until a stint my senior year at a politicians office, when I realized-politicians don’t actually get much done). My mom always wanted me to be an attorney. But don’t worry mom, people dislike insurance agents almost as much as attorneys. Just kidding!
As a young adult, I wanted to be an entrepreneur. And well, here I am living the dream!
But seriously….. an insurance agency is a great place to learn about
- customer service
- social media
- and so much more!
We are looking for marketing and business interns looking for experience in a small business.
Our most recent intern AJ, really enjoyed working at our office (or that’s what he told us anyway! Below AJ reflected on his experience working over 100 hours with us:
“My time interning at the Johns Family Agency, I learned how insurance works from a more detailed aspect. I learned about customer service- such as how to answer the phone when a prospect or client called. I was taught what to ask a potential customer and the specific information I would need to run a quote. I then learned how to run a quote with multiple insurance carriers.
I learned new technology systems and how to use specific agency applications such as IMS and Applied Rater. I learned how to enter information into the IMS system as well as update any outdated information. I updated the files and scanned any new documentation that needed to be put in the system electronically.
I also learned about marketing by sending out postcards and marketing pieces and reaching out to old prospects to see if they were interested in refreshed insurance quotes.”
