I didn’t come into the insurance world knowing a whole lot about insurance, like any laymanI knew it was important to have insurance, but the in’s and out’s of insurance where a mystery to me. Fast forward…. now that I’m an ‘insider’, I wanted to share with you a few a things that I found to be the most surprising and useful for anyone to know…..
Here are few top secret insurance tips useful for a layman.
Fuzzy buddies beware!
I never considered my drooling little boxer pup when thinking about insurance, except maybe when he tore up the mail with my car insurance ID cards…that was fun to explain when asking my agent for new ones.
Beware new home buyers many insurance companies have guidelines for our fuzzy friends. Certain breeds can exclude an applicant entirely (or at least limit their options for insurance coverage).
And dog lovers…. the list won’t surprise you. Breeds such as Pit Bull Terriers, Chow Chows, Dobermans, Akitas, Rottweilers, German shepherds and Mastiffs are a few that are on some home insurance blacklists. So consider this when you get our new best friend from the shelter.
If you happen to have a dog, you should definitely disclose it so you don’t have any problems down the line getting a claim paid, because you misrepresented on your application. (Which I now know to mean…… you lied or with held the truth when you applied for insurance!)
Because we work with multiple companies no matter what type of funny friend you have, we can find home insurance for you!
Your Credit Matters! (A lot!)
New home buyers listen up! Credit matters, a lot. The better your credit, the less you typically pay for your mortgage interest and the less you pay for insurance. So make sure you pay keep your debit to income ratio down and pay your bills on time. This will save you big in the long run!
And- Don’t wait to switch your auto insurance! Get auto insurance with your new homeowners insurance. Your credit is typically the best it will ever be right before closing! You can save big by bundling home and auto together right from the beginning. Also once you drop that load of cash and put yourself in debt for your dream home, your credit won’t be as stellar for a while and neither will your insurance premiums if you decide to switch later. Its worth switching while the rates are in your favor!
Life insurance is Love insurance!
I know its not a fun topic but, getting life insurance isn’t for you- its for your family and those who care for you. Life insurance is the gift that keeps on giving.
Life insurance? No Way! Life insurance, Yes way!
No one wants to talk about it and its understandable. My mentality before I started working for Johns Family Insurance was
‘I’m 23 years old, and I’m healthy. Why do I need to buy life insurance?’
The answer is derived from that fact, I’m young and I’m just starting my life. Now it the best time to get insurance, as the prices are the lowest when I don’t think I ‘need’ it.
In a few years I will be putting a down payment on a home and starting my family…. And getting something in place now is 20/20 foresight!
Another term for life insurance is ‘Mortgage protection’, if something happens to me after I buy my house who is going to pay the 30-year mortgage? Would my family have to sell the house and move if I pass away unexpectedly? And I realize now there are different types of life insurance to fit anyone’s needs and budget! I can get $500,000 of coverage for $7 a week. That’s less than I spend on coffee in a week! Talk about a pick me up!
Even if you don’t have a mortgage, there are many reasons to get life insurance. One important reason is so your loved ones don’t have to come up with $20,000 for funeral home and final expense costs (and yes it is really that expensive). It’s worth it to call even if its just for a quote for your grandmother to handle her final expenses. It’s always better to plan now than to be blindsided by the loss of a loved one and a huge out of pocket expense later.
